Nicknamed “The Galveston Giant”, in 1908 at the height of the Jim Crow era, Jack Johnson became the first black world heavyweight boxing champion. Johnson went on to become one of the most dominant champions of his time and remains a significant historical figure in heavyweight boxing. Johnson held onto the title until 1915. In 1990 he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Did you know Jack was also an inventor? He invented an adjustable wrench in 1922 and received a patent for his invention!
